white_cross
Just curious does any one know where I can get a very crappy super cheap set of wheels and tires to mount on this car while it is being sand blasted and painted. All they need to do is hold air and be pushed around in the shop I kind of hope to restore the wheels that came on this car when I got it. Plus they are very rare rims So either way I don't want to sand blast them.
Jim Eh.
Use 3/4" plywood and bolt them in place. As long as you are not rolling on sand, it works well (oh and they are round ... ).
nopistons
what bolt pattern? 4x114.3?if so, I have some steel wheels that are that pattern as well as MKII supra rims that would work too. you might be able to find some older accord wheels that work as well. white_cross
I am slowly tracking down parts for the Celica. I got another part in the mail this week from another member on first gen celica forums: here is my old fender (the bottom is completely gone on the back of it) beside the "new" one: Today My dad came over to check out the fender. We spent some time pulling the dents out of it and test fitting it on my car: I also like that the fender has the oem decal stripes on it. I am going to take it down to the local sign shop and have them make an exact copy of the stripe. The nice thing is I can get both front fenders graphics by inverting the graphic for the other side. I did not have any reference for making graphics for my car since my car was in primer when I got it. I can also have them extend the graphics for the door too. So this is a big plus for me. I plan on having stencils made up so I can paint the stripes on the car instead of decals.
MRS Joe
I'd take the dimensions and stick to decals if it was oe. That way should you change your mind on the look, you can remove it. Paint is expensive and permanent as I've learned. Also if your going through the trouble, you may be able to make them up and resell to other owners. There was someone doing it in the past but has since stopped, these ones also seemed out of proportion. For me to paint the stripes on is not a big deal as I am an automotive painter, but I see your point about not being able to change my mind once the paint is applied. What I did like about painting the stripes on is being able to base the stripes and clear over top of them then if I block sand the clear where the stripes go and re clear the fenders and doors I get a completely smooth as glass stripe with no paint edge between colors. The nice thing about having the sign shop recreate the graphics is that I can have them make the stencils for painting inverted so I can paint them on and then have them cut the graphics out normally to create a decal to sell to others. white_cross
So went on an adventure today with my dad. I picked up this beauty: It is a 1973. It was advertised at $150. It was advertised as a 1981 model year with no motor or trans. A guy I met at autocross in Gimli found the add for this car on Kajijiji. I figured for $150 I can't go wrong. I figured the front bumper alone is worth close to that. So got my hands on a 2 wheel dolly and headed out to St. Claude. The guy selling the car got it as part of his property in an estate sale. This was the last real automotive treasure on his land. He listed off a really cool list of cars that he all ready sold off of his yard. We looked the car over and I was expecting the floors to be gone. Well quite opposite actually from The floors seem very solid with the exception of the rockers which I have a new set of. To top it off the car has a motor and trans in it and the motor seems to be rebuilt so I am going to attempt to fire it up. The one rear tire was not holding air and I needed it to so i could get it home. The owner of the Celica took me to the shop which was full of wheels and tires. Then on the work bench I saw a pile of more toyota parts. 2 more smiley bumpers and a pair of fenders. He threw those in for 25 bucks! We tried 3 different rim/tires and one of them held air with a very small hiss the rest had very noticeable hisses. We mounted the wheel on the car and drove home. Got to my place after dark, after an hour drive and unstrapped the car from the dolly and the crazy thing the tire held air the whole drive but in the time it took to get the tie straps off of the car the tire went flat! So the thing is with this car I did not get a TOD because the last guy who owned the Celica passed away and the car was acquired by the guy I bought it from with his property. So I need to look into what it takes to set up ownership (if it is possible) at MPI. So my thoughts on this one is It could make a really sweet autocross car. It looks way to nice to cut up to use for parts for my 1972 Celica. I like the idea of a classic autocross car. If I can not get a TOD I will need to get my self a trailer to bing the car out to autocross events. If all this car needs for rust repair to pass safety is rockers I will be pretty excited. For sure the cheapest car I have ever bought!
MRS Joe
If you can't get a tod thru mpi, you can go to the rcmp, and get them to run and clear the vin. It's a pita but can be worth it. But if they find that the car was stolen at any point, they have the legal right to take it, but that's unlikely here.

nopistons
I've done this kind of thing many times. One option is you phone vehicle registrations @ MPI and they run the VIN.They will put a note in that VIN's file when it checks out. When you go to register the vehicle, the agent will see the note when they punch in the serial number and register the vehicle in your name with the B.O.S. and a "Stat Dec". You can alleviate some of the mess by going right to MPI HQ, main floor, city place. They can do it all in one shot as everyone is under one roof. Bring all the paperwork you have for the car, photos of the car and VIN plate could help.

I will start Tomorrow by going to the insurance office in town. I was told by someone else to ask an agent for a form to declare Origin.

MRS Joe
I would try Darin's MPI route before persuing any avenue thru the rcmp, as I know that is a painful tedious process.
nopistons
Doesn't the RCMP charge $85 or something to run the VIN? It has been my experience that smaller or rural agents/brokers do not have this sort of thing happen often and many do not understand the process or want to understand it. As frustrating as it is, it's best to go right to downtown Winnipeg and do it that way.
white_cross
I would try Darin's MPI route before persuing any avenue thru the rcmp, as I know that is a painful tedious process. I think I might Just do that. I am in Winkler so Winnipeg is a bit out of the way but if I have to I will drive into Winnipeg. When I went into the local insurance office, I did talk to one of the younger agents, She did not seem like a car person. This was the only person available to talk to, the same one who made it difficult to gain owner ship on my first celica with Just a bill of sale. So I agree with them not knowing or wanting to understand the process. I know when my Dad and I built his 1970 Nova he got it out of the auto wrecker. He only had a bill of sale from the owner of the auto wrecker (a friend of his) and he got a TOD for his car locally from MPI. I talked with my dad after being told "no TOD" at the office and he said he knew the owner of the one insurance company in town and we should try again by talking to him. I will try that next and then if no luck I am going to try the MPI Office. Do you think it makes a difference in my situation that the Guy I bought it from got it on his yard included as part of the estate sale and never got a TOD for the car and then sold the car to me with Just a bill of sale? Sounds like the same situation as My dad had with his car.
white_cross
So on a more exciting note. I spent some time washing the 1973 Celica yesterday. Interesting finds: There was a small wasp nest attached to the bottom of the hood. The rad cap was missing and so some squirrel made a storage unit in the radiator for his winter stash of nuts. Also kind of cool to have an original Toyota key my 1972 is a recut. Clean car with all its sweet patina
white_cross
I also pressure washed the trunk out: engine compartment before and after pressure washing it: Good windshield and really nice dash pad: The inside is still a mess That will be this weeks project: Data plate:
white_cross
Pulled these parts out of the car: (I will probably be selling every thing here except the fenders and am/fm Radio. I have 3 am/fm radios now good to have spares.) Me with the cleaned car and my two 1st gen's, Thinking I will have to call my garage: Dads Toy Garage. So I have a pair of Celicas which I never thought would happen. My plan right now is to pull the 1972 out of the garage and bring the 1973 in. I am a bigger fan of the 1971-1972 Celicas. There are a few things that make the 1973 different: Bumpers, hood flutes, Tail lights and centre piece, Gas cap is on the pillar instead of the tail panel. The interior has a different centre console. I plan to put these 1972 items on the 1973 and build it first. The1973 is very solid with a LOT less rusted out parts on the car so It will be on the road way sooner.
white_cross
I have had a lot of interest on the rear bumper. But I am not sure if It will be going up for sale yet. I May need to use it after all. I have been considering building both celicas one for a full restoration and one as a track rat for HPDE events and autocross. I am leaning towards my track rat Celica having Nascar style steel rims and 240zg style flares and the body and paint on it will be primer/faded silver Then I don't have to worry about messing up a perfect paint job. Then for motor options either a beams or f20c. The interior would be very sparse, with a driver and passenger seat dash board and roll bar. Of course some cool suspension parts would be a must. Well that is me dreaming for now. No paint job means more money spent for going fast I found a lot of grossness in the 1973 celica so today My dad came down to give me a hand cleaning out the car. I found so much mouse turds and acorn Nuts in the cabin of the car I did not want to touch the car. So Canadian tire and my pressure washer were my friend. The interior was rinsed clean with the garden hose (every thing from top to bottom) then I soaked it at least 3 times over in a mixture of bleach and water, pressure washed it out. After that it was sprayed again with mr clean and finally pressure washed one more time. I did not really care what got wet Just needed it safe to work in. white_cross
I pulled the 1973 Celica into the garage, checked the oil it was clean. Added some seafoam to the oil. Cleaned the carb. checked all the wires for damage and connection. put a bit of oil in through the spark plug holes the plugs looked good. I put a breaker bar on the crank pulley it moved very freely. The muffler was gone so I Schmaded (low german for Make it work with what you have) the factory one from my Subaru on with zip ties "because road kill" (I know I watch a lot of Roadkill) It just needs to keep the sound down to test the motor. Stole the battery out of my Mach 1. Hooked up the battery in the Celica. All the lights and wipers etc worked! The motor cranks over very nicely. Just no spark so I am close. Pretty good for a car that was supposed to have no motor or trans. I also looked in the oil fill hole and the rocker arms look like brand new. I have pictures of progress coming soon. white_cross
So I tested the coil it is shorted out so I ordered a new one today it should be here on Monday. So hopefully it starts on monday. Some pictures of my exhaust install for your entertainment: The floor is pretty decent and should clean up nicely: If you drive by at mid night you just might see this:
Corey
'Schmaded' indeed! Haha! Add a coat hanger or safety wire if you're going to run it for very long. Those zipties will melt pretty quickly.

white_cross
Well it runs to some extent: I am very impressed with Toyota quality at this point. I read somewhere that at 300,000km that the 18R-C motor was just getting broken in I spent a bunch of time getting this motor to this point where it will idle. It won't rev yet but I will keep plugging away at it. So far I have done this to the motor: New plugs, wires, coil, vacuum lines. I disassembled and cleaned the fuel pump out it was not pumping. The gas in the fuel pump was so rubbery and vanished that it would not pump now it works really well. I hooked a battery up and no spark, so I cleaned the points and gapped them traced power all the way to the distributer and the there was power all the way to the condenser. I pulled a condenser off the 1972 motor and put it on the 1973 and I had spark. This weekend I pulled the carburetors from both cars apart and took the best parts from both to make one better unit. I thoroughly cleaned the parts I intended on using by soaking them in lacquer thinner used aerosol carb cleaner to blow out all the tiny passages. Put it together and bolted it to the motor. It would run for a bit then stall right away. I tried opening the choke and it would run longer then shut off again. Then It ran for about 2 minutes and shut off and went back to starting and stalling right away. While the motor was running I adjusted the fuel and idle which helped. I tried to rev the motor and it would just not rev but sounded like it wanted to. I have a suspicion of the power valve not working properly. I pulled the power valve off of the other carb today and it looks nicer I will try that one some time this week. I also have a carb rebuild kit coming this week so hopefully I get better results, once the rebuild kit and power valve are switched out. It has been fun figuring out this puzzle. The last thing I did on the car today was flush the coolant system and radiator out with a garden hose there was a lot of sediment and rust particles floating around in there. I will replace the rad hoses and heater hoses before I put proper coolant in the motor. So all my hoses/vacuum lines are going to be new and not give me any worries. I love the simplicity of this old motor.
