CF-18 air show North of Oakbank

My daughter and I were playing in the snow last night, when a CF-18* did a low and slow pass over our house. We waved, the pilot waved back.* I think it was a CF-18 from web searches I've done. Might have been something else...We didn't expect the next part: The pilot then did 3 more passes right over our back yard. Two high-G turns, plus one quicker straight pass. Best air show I've seen! I think that's the closest I've ever been to one of those planes. I felt like a giddy 12-year-old boy in awe of the cool plane. My daughter was jumping up and down during and then talking about it the rest of the night. After the last pass, I could hear cheers from all the neighbouring houses too. I couldn't imagine the psychological terror if this thing was not on the same side as me in a war situation. You feel completely insignificant and powerless in comparison as it's coming towards you, almost silently. Then the whole world is shaking as it roars past. Wow. A huge thank you to the kind pilot that took a couple of minutes to put on the show! Hugely impressive machinery and piloting skills!

Wait until the next air show in Winnipeg. The planes usually do a hold/circle and return over Dugald/Oakbank area. No need to pay to watch the show in town when it comes right over you. Awsome sight expecially when the Hercs do a tight circle.

A few years ago, they had a B1 Stealth bomber do a flyby at the airshow. They set up their approach from outside the city, doing a low, slow turn over my house. Unfortunately, I was out of town but my wife got a good look and found it quite ominous and large!

Nico - I think so. I'm not a plane guy/fan/expert so I'm not sure. Single seater, going fast, turning hard, 100% bad-a$$. :)I've heard that something similar happened over St. James a little after 8 PM, maybe someone was out for a final joyride?

Before he retired, my father in-law was a flight service specialist for NavCanada. The pilots that test flew the F-4 Phantoms after the engine rebuilds would file their flight plan with his department. The general flight plan was 1000' above ground level to Dryden ON and back. Flight time: approximately 15 minutes! That would be one wild ride.

I can't imagine seeing the pilot up close like that, terrifying yet exhilarating! We don't have any military air bases nearby. Where would this CF-18 be coming from, temporary post Richardson International?

Congratulations, Corey, you passed aircraft recognition. I checked with my sources (who shall remain anonymous) and confirmed there was indeed a CF-18 out playing last night.

Haha, probably. It's the right colour! ;) Did I mention I'm not a plane guy? Apparently my daughter was telling my wife all about it all day long. She was a little worried that it would be loud again though.

Nick, I'll say he was 'playing'! That little show probably cost a few thousand $. I'm honoured to have witnessed a great waste of fuel!

Hey' date=' rusoman, what a/c type are you taxiing in there?[/quote']King Air 200, we're going for a ground run.

Rusoman - I didn't mention that I worked at 17 wing in a civilian role before. One morning three fighters were in a huge hurry to go somewhere, they took off in formation just as I was 100' from the building I worked in. That wasn't loud, that was PAIN! I covered my ears and ran inside, and then straight over to a window to watch them fly off. Cool, but once was enough for me. Nish - $45k? Wow. That's a little over $0.001 per Canadian per hour. Thanks to all Canadians for helping to pay for our show. ;)

@rusoman That's cool you got to see it at the Airport.Saw this thing fly over as I was driving down Rt90. Heard the roar. It was pretty awesome. One of my dreams younger was to be a fighter pilot.

Yeah love the noise, was at airshows before where they would break the sound barrier. Sound like a double cannon going off. That pic is from Oshkosh btw :D I love planes.

Didn't everyone want to be a jet pilot at some point? Of course, I was a kid when Top Gun came out. I'm pretty sure every kid that saw that movie wanted to be a pilot. The pilots I've spoken with have described it as hours of boredom followed by minutes of excitement/terror. Hmm, relation to autocross?

[/quote']When I was 12, I saw Smokey and The Bandit and wanted to be a truck driver :)Then when I was 21, I saw Top Gun and wanted to be a fighter jock. I had actually applied to the Forces when I was 18 but was a hair too tall in the sitting position to safely fit the ejection seat of a CF-18. So, I went the private pilot route instead.

I think your private airshow pilot cracked a pass off over your old house too. There were 2 of them that came in 10 minutes after the other. If only all of our tax dollars went to awesome stuff like that (and roads without 10ft deep pot holes):P.

It's never too late to be one ;)

My dad was a pilot and loved air shows. They seem to have gotten tamer over the years with aircraft having to be farther and farther from crowds while doing stunts, but they are still pretty darn exciting. My favorites are the P51 Mustang, Spitfire and the A10 Warthog.

Next time you are in Fargo, stop in to the Fargo Air Museum. Nice copies of a P-51, a Corsair (memories of Baa Baa Black Sheep) and a Grumman Avenger. The Avenger is a navy copy with folding wings and is absolutely HUGE. It make the P-51 look like a Piper cub. I can't believe these things ever got off the deck with a full load. They are at http://fargoairmuseum.org/

pilots have claimed an abnormally high percentage of dubious technical aborts while flying the Bieber Bomber. Mechanics scratch their heads and say there is never anything wrong with the Bieber Hornet, while in response, the pilots say “Never say Never.” This photo was taken at an air show in Gatineau in 2012 just two weeks before 3 Wing stripped the design from the aircraft and, miraculously, the serviceability rate went up nearly 20%.
