July 18-19 Race Weekend - Volunteers Needed

Hi Everyone,

I don't know about you, but I am feeling positive and a bit relieved that the World seems to be working on getting back to normal. We are not completely out of the woods yet, but at least we are moving forward. And that means we can get back to some racing!

The recent polls have shown that people are ready to fly again, and that means we need to be ready too. So here I am, thinking of all of our awesome Volunteers and wondering... How have you been? Do you miss the craziness? Are you ready to get back out there?

If you're looking for some adventure, and you want to be part of the action, you are exactly what we are looking for. It's okay if you are a new member to the club, or an old school veteran or racer, we can always use your support. If you have never been a Volunteer before but you want to, this is your first big chance of the summer. We will get you hooked up with an experienced worker, we will show you everything you need to know, and I look forward to meeting you. If it isn't your first time, you know what you're in for, and I look forward to seeing you again.

As with everything else all around us, there will still be Social Distancing procedures in order, and we will work with whatever quirks this is sure to kick up. If you are not comfortable with something, please let me know asap, and we will figure it out before we even get out there. As in the past, Volunteers will have their lunch covered by the club for the day, and after the races there will be the usual opportunity to get out in your own car for some Volunteer Laps.

I strongly ask again as a personal favor, if you are planning on coming out to Volunteer, please let me know. I lose sleep before the races when I have no idea who is going to be there in the morning, or if I am going to be standing there all by myself with 20 suited up race drivers staring at me. That horrifying image has become one of my greatest fears, way up there with tax hikes and cauliflower. Even if you have just decided, late the night before, that you're coming out with us, send me a message or text. I will have my phone number, email address, and even start a list on this post. Feel free to hit me up with any questions, thoughts, or concerns too, I am always here for you.

That green flag isn't far away, see you soon!

You are correct, no lunch wagon on site. Something else is in the works for the Volunteers from what I understand.

I will be there for Saturday. Maybe Sunday if you need me too (and I don't screw up too badly.)

Please be gentle on me. I haven't been to Gimli since the 1980s when I crewed for Vince Squib and Hank Marcoux in a BMW 2002. Lots of fun in those days, and spent a few weekends helping out on corner one (when there weren't Air Canada 767s nearly landing on our head, like there was one weekend.) I apologize in advance, as I am old and my reaction times aren't like they used to be. (Or, maybe, never were.)

Hopefully, you folks will welcome an old timer who just wants to help out for a few weekends on a flag station. It will bring back some great memories.

For those who don't know me, I am a professional firearms instructor. (My forum name is from an old television show in the 1960s.) In addition to training for police, military and government, I spent 25 years in the film industry, training actors how to shoot guns in action movies and teaching workshops across Canada and down in L.A. It's been a great career.

See everyone this Saturday. (I will be the old guy with the moustache from the 1970s when it WAS in style, plus the COVID beard.)

Shooter (Dave?), I believe I am allowed to speak for the racers coming to Gimli....you are definitely welcome! Everyone on the track knows that without volunteers we can't race. Therefore we thank you already in advance for showing up and helping out.

And don't worry about the reaction time...we just drive slower:D

Welcome back Dave.  Don't be sensitive about age.  I'm 81 and just getting warmed up so I have lots of room for you.  Bless you for thinking of us.  Come and introduce  yourself when you get there.  I think the workers meeting is at 8:45.

Thanks Scott, Dason and donrolando . I will be there Saturday for 8:45. My wife and I are a bit old for the tent in the infield, so we are doing a room at the Lakeview, and dinner at the Ship and Plough Friday night. Glad to hear I won't be the oldest person there. I changed my forum name to "Have Gun Will Travel", and if you are my age or older, you will remember that television show from the 1960s. It's pretty appropriate for what I do.

I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and helping out where I can.
