Ron Janzen
Hi, I've bought a turbo kit for my car and I'm wondering if it is street legal to have open waste dump on the turbo or if it has to be integrated to the exhaust?
donrolandofurioso
I am willing to step onto this narrow ledge here... Are you talking about the waste gate, or the blow-off /pop-off valve? I think you might be talking about the latter one, but if you talk about the waste gate, it definitely has to be exhausted to the outside of the engine compartment, unless you want exhaust gases to come into the cabin. All exhaust gases (on a street going vehicle) by law have to be released behind the rear axle of the vehicle, and have to be meeting emission laws. This means on any modern vehicle they have to go through the catalytic convertors. Most turbos are designed that the waste gases are routed around the turbine wheel directly into the exhaust for that very reason.

I would integrate it. Open-air dumps have their own set of "challenges". Edited April 30, 2020 by nopistons
Corey
Street legal? No. It's an open dump that bypasses mufflers and cats.
Ron Janzen
Thanks fellas, I've contacted the supplier to see if i can still change the order to an integrated waste dump.
donrolandofurioso
Just out of curiosity: what was your original intention? Did you plan on running a separate exhaust pipe from the Waste Gate? Edited May 9, 2020 by donrolandofurioso
Ron Janzen
The kit (Performance AutoWerks) comes with an integrated or open waste gate dump. I believe the open option us a separate pipe that routes the dump straight out of the engine bay towards the road. I'm guessing this is a racing option if you run the car only the track? Anyways, switched it to integrated.
MRS Joe
Jeff used to have an open dump on his integra back in the day. Was loud as hell at full boost. It’s a novelty that I think would wear off quickly as we age. Also as mentioned not legal, and we know the viu will nail us for that but leave rotten Structurally compromised cars on the road.
