Some of the other options may be good for other sections like before the dip. Using them going North-South at some point people may be close to either the planters at the tent, cop cars, transit trailer or the bathroom. The slalom I thought was safe had people going diagonally towards the north/west half of that section and it didn't turn out so well so I don't really know though. mzf Posted July 15, 2008 Share Posted July 15, 2008 My quick thoughts on the drawings. Not meant to be negative, just my own opinions based on what I found when setting up for Sundays event. Pimple: Takes us too close to the planters/tent. If you flip it over, we are way too close to the cop cars/washroom area.Wallop: Same as above, only this one looks like a very punishingly slow turn in the middle. I also don't think the area is wide enough to do something like that. You'd end up with the Pimple.Passing Lane: Might work, but again we need to keep them away from the tent and washroom areas. Depends a lot on entry and exit speed. The straight section just means acceleration into a tight turn.Chutes: I think this one has the most promise, although we'd need to figure out a way to have the car safely make it to the finish line when coming back (without getting sideways if we had a tight turn at the end).T-Wall: Fun, but too fast.L-Shapes: Also might work but we'd need to watch how much we pull them back after the L. People might try and keep their speed and just continue their right turn into a nice slide off course.2nd L: Looks good... entry/exit at the top (north) end might put it too close to the washrooms. What if we start with a design that meets our requirements in theory and than just kept tweaking that design until it is perfect. We could file it away and start another one. I know it could possibly be the same basic course for a few events but road race courses never change, always the same. This works right into Mark's data base idea. Pull a file and course design has been done and all that is left is setup.I think we could get a complete model for a perfect course each time. JT_TT Posted July 24, 2008 Share Posted July 24, 2008 i see no reason why the T wall has to be "too fast" the one at nationals we were came at it from a pretty hard right hand corner did some nice full acceleration then we had to brake just a bit for the T I probably went through at about 65 or 70 then accelerated out to a maximum of about 80 or 85 at the very max before the next corner. you may want to watch the video from my runs last year to get a picture of it, but i don't remember seeing anybody spin during that element because it's just one corner and not a series of them that would cause an oscillation. i'm very certain we could make that one work for the site. i would rather see us carry more speed then have heavy offsets or weird slaloms that will induce spins. That was by far my favorite and I was lucky enough to marshal there. Lots of running for cones but no spins. Getting the opening "just right" is critical. We have lots of experience with slalom spacing, we know what is too slow and what is too fast, but we have no clue about what spacing works for these elements.
