Ice autocross pictures

haha' date=' was Jim the only one needing tape this year? ;)[/quote']I didn't notice any cracks but Jim sure made a good effort! :)Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImageThere was a bit of damage in the first set of runs but it looks like I missed some moments in the second set of runs. I'm surprised those Subarus had to be pulled out. They have AWD! ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!! :DThe rest of my pictures are up now. I was only there for the first set of runs but there's 349 pictures so I'm pretty sure I got everyone. The numbers are a bit out of order from when I changed memory cards and they make more sense if you look at them right to left in the number order instead of how they uploaded.http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v260/solo2nx/Ice%20auto-x/?start=all

hey listen, I didn't break anything though and that's two years running i was a HERO.thanks to jim for all the help throughout the day. If it wasn't for the big ford with blizzaks the event would have been over after the second run.

Here's my in-car vid of Run 1. Unfortunately I missed taping run 2, my fastest. :( I misjudged my speed into the finish chicane. Oops!

You can hear the engine straining at low rpms a number of times - that's some very aggressive left-foot braking while on the throttle. That makes FWD cars oversteer at will on ice!

Nish, those shots with the wind and the snow make me wonder if we were all crazy! :D Nice shots Steve. hahaha, I thought my car was dirty until Peter showed up. :P That reminds me why I didn't want to buy a blue car. ;)http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v260/solo2nx/Ice%20auto-x/?action=view&current=StMalo0922.jpgThe snow in my front grill makes it look like I hit a snow bank at the event but I was lucky that way this year. No contact! That snow, as well as the snow packed in my rims and the nice clean bottom side skirt are from an incident the night before, lol. I guess I can get my front bumper fixed now... :D Sue :)

stoppable awd?The surprised comments on awd cars getting stuck: There are physical limits. Have you seen the roller section of the new car test hill? If a car is high-sided (weight on the floor, not the tires) nothing much helps. If you do not (cannot) lock all the diffs, more chance of getting stuck. When we used to run winter, country-road TSD rallies decades ago, they used to say that AWD got stuck like 2 wheel drive, but much further from help... The 2wd would get stuck a few hundred feet from the main road, the AWD several times as far (more of a big walk back to civilization).

traction engineeringHow many of you have seen the slightly inclined test track, where a few feet of concrete are replaced with a set of cargo rollers (5 cm in diameter, 50 cm long, dense spacing)? It is a clear indication of the importance of limited slip and AWD. It simulates a slipping wheel.Mil-spec HUMVEES, and Cayennes can raise themselves. If Subes could do that after an ice AX crash, and lock all the diffs, they would have a good chance of getting out without assistance. It is pretty obvious that you do not belong here, if you cannot accept a short, open-ended, intelligent discourse without feeling you are being called an ***diot. It is not correct to interpret an explanation of physics and engineering principles as an insult to the general membership.

what rules? As Sue already pointed out, the J.27 topic has become a forum monster. There should have been one thread. Many of our esteemed and beloved members have violated the 'bandwidth rules' flagrantly and without remonstration. I do not believe there is any way to bring order to this widespread group of threads. I could have started another, on the engineering of gettin'out of snowbanks, but do we really need even more threads on a single event? If so, then, as moderator, please collect all the related postings out of the existing threads, and put them in new ones, properly named.Anyone have the time to do this 'sort task'?:banghead:
