Upcoming Autoslalom events at Gimli

Recommended Posts

Good day Autocross enthusiast! Starting this post to get your inputs on all Gimli events scheduling.
There are 5 scheduled days' event at Gimli for the remaining season, I want to gather thoughts from you regarding start and end hours for both Saturday and Sunday events. One idea we have is to run Saturday event extra long (early evening) and end Sunday events by no later than ~3PM.

Saturday, June 8 - Level 1 school at St. Andrews
Sunday, June 9 - Event #3 at St. Andrews
Saturday, June 22 (morning) - Test & Tune at Gimli
Saturday, June 22 (afternoon) - Event #4 at Gimli

Sunday, June 23 - Event #5 at Gimli
Sunday, July 7 (morning) - Event #6 at Gimli
Sunday, July 7 (afternoon) - Event #7 at Gimli

Saturday, July 20 - Level 2 school at St. Andrews
Sunday, July 21 - Event #8 at St. Andrews
Saturday, August 10 - Event #9 at St. Andrews
Sunday, August 11 - Event #10 at St. Andrews
Saturday, August 24 - Event #11 at St. Andrews
Sunday, August 25 - Event #12 at St. Andrews
Saturday, September 21 - Event #13 at Gimli
Sunday, September 22 - Event #14 at Gimli

Pending final decision, we will move the whole schedule up to accommodate Event's start time at 10AM sharp.
I will compress the registration time for all Gimli events down to a 45 minutes window (8:30AM - 9:15AM). This will increase the amount of possible fun runs given we have enough interests at the end of each events.

If you have any suggestions, comments, or objections, now is the time! Pending schedule shown above will be effective around mid-night tonight (June 7th), at least for June 22nd events.

I'm happy to hear that a compressed schedule would allow more fun runs time. I love autocross and the more runs we can get in a day the better I think. Another option I see is reducing 15 minutes from the time between registration is closed and drivers meeting. There's a lot of down time in my opinion.

A slight delay here, the above suggested schedule will likely be implemented starting Test and Tune & Event #4, that way there is sufficient time for everyone to notice the schedule change.
Also, would like to see more feedback and reaction to this proposed change.

Be sure to check out the upcoming June 22 and 23rd triple events schedule! They are now open for registration if you are wondering.

For the event on Saturday after the test and tune, the course isn't open for walking until after registration closes?

Oh, that wasn't the intention. As soon as the course is done/ready/tested, it'll be open to walk. Hopefully that's before registration closes.

I have a suggestion. I have been autocrossing with this club since 1994 or so and have always assumed that 4 runs is the standard. But, we competed with Nebraska region and they do 5 runs per driver (125 drivers at event) and we raced with Badlands Region and they did 8 runs per driver (split up, group A does 4 runs, then group B does 4 runs, then group A does another 4 runs then group B does another 4 runs) with 75 drivers. Why can't we do 5 or even 6 runs? Sure, the day will run a little longer but we will all get more bang for the buck and there will be no need for fun runs after.

Interesting thought, Mark! I've seen other clubs run more runs and kind of like it.

Another thing I've seen is an 'X' class (or some other name) where only your first 3 runs count towards your event results. This simulates the big US events as far as getting it done in 3, but gives you extra fun runs every time.

We have small entry numbers this weekend. I'm open to doing more runs if everyone wants.

Question for the Sunday event, is everything one hour later as it was last year? (Gates open 10am etc)

We'll run as per the MSReg.com schedule:

Gate opens 9:00 AM

Check in and registration 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Course open to walk 9:00 AM - 10:45 AM

Rookie meeting and course walk 10:15 AM – 10:45 AM

Drivers meeting 10:45 AM – 11:00 AM

First run group starts 11:00 AM

Lunch 12:30 PM

Second run group starts 1:00 PM

The idea is to have everyone over watching the end of the road racing and/or home for dinner.

I like some of these ideas - might stimulate more participation.

I think working the course for six consecutive runs would be a bit much, but like Mark suggested, we could alternate the run groups.  Here's my suggestion for a typical Autoslalom schedule:

11:00 AM - same start time as existing schedule.

11:00 AM - Group A - three runs @ 15 min/run + 15 min changeover = one hour duration

12:00 PM - Group B - three runs @ 15 min/run = 45 min duration

Lunch Break - approximately 12:45 PM to 1:15 PM + 15 min driver preparation

1:30 PM - Group A - three runs @ 15 min/run + 15 min changeover = one hour duration

2:30 PM - Group B - three runs @ 15 min/run = 45 min duration

3:15 - 4:00 PM - announce standings and course cleanup.

Please note that the above schedule is a best case scenario with no allowances for unplanned delays such as timing issues, reruns etc. etc.

I also like the idea of alternating run groups to get more runs in. On another note I noticed there’s only 7 people signed up for the test and tune so far. Is there a minimum number of drivers for the event?

We're definitely a go for the T&T/fun runs. We'll have to be flexible and make it work with so few people, but that probably means many many runs.

I anticipate a few people in cars getting cones.

well, good to know as I was wondering how we can do it with just 7 people :)
