2018 Solo Nationals almost full!

Recommended Posts

I struggled to look ahead enough today and couldn't keep up with the fast guys. Bummer, but I held on to 7th and picked up a trophy.

Here's my day 2.  Frustrated to be 2 seconds off the leaders, but I see many mistakes in this video that all add up:

That was a really fun but challenging course.  A number of decreasing radius sweepers into precision sections.

For interest's sake, here are the two fastest runs in class, unfortunately both had a cone so they're unofficial.

My favorite Nationals so far, out of 11 visits. Why? Because the car was working so well that I didn't have to spend all my time testing and tuning and could take in the fun stuff like Tacos & Talent and the party at the Canadian Embassy (tent, but it's sovereign Canadian territory) where free craft beer flowed like water. I have always had good results in the rain so I may be one of the few people who was looking forward to it. My hunch was right, I beat Jeff K by 5 seconds on a very rainy Day 1 and he made a good comeback on a dry day 2 but I still managed 3rd. I would have done better but I played it too conservative on Day 1 and didn't execute properly on Day 2. There were a lot of stories from this years Nationals (crashes, possible cheating, racing after dark, near misses, deep water) and I'm glad I was there for it. The Pink Panther is going to come back even stronger next year. Here's a video from Nationals 2018 Nationals

Track looks so fun! How many runs did you get per day?

3 runs per day is standard for Nationals.

This was my first Nationals and although I didn't meet my goals this year, I am hoping to head back next year armed with the knowledge acquired from this year. Still had a ton of fun. The people and courses made things enjoyable even if conditions were not ideal. I don't think I have ever raced in water that deep and we had the glory of drying the track on Wednesday.

In the wet there were times the course would absolutely disappear and I was driving and timing my turns from memory. And that is in a car with a windsheild! Not sure what the folks without windshields were doing. I knew we were giving up something with the narrower rear tires, but how much never really hit home until we heard the cars on day 2. They were on the power much sooner and harder than Chris and I could even imagine doing. We will make changes for next year.

I had the luxury of working sound which was not setup either day. On Day 1 I shagged cones, on day 2 I had the luxury of not working and went and watched CAM and Prepared cars on the East course while the West Course (where I should have been working) had a 1 hour delay to clean up trans fluid. The CarPorn alone is worth the trip!

East course in the deep water:

My best run on the West course. I never did execute the starting or finish slalom well.

... I'm trying an external microphone on the air cleaner.  I think it's much better than the usual buzzing body panels from the internal GoPro mic.  The whistling/whooshing noise is the throttle butterflies at part throttle, which is kind of interesting to hear how often I pull out of the throttle part-way to tighten my line.

Much better! I can't stand watching racing videos with terrible wind noise (mine included). Glad you were able to figure out a solution. Thumbs up!

Congrats on all those who raced well and placed well. And even if you didn't I'm sure it was a blast. I remember Spring Nats being a lot of fun, this seems like it's just cranked up to 11. The sheer volume of awesome cars must be quite a sight.
