2016 WCMA Regional Autoslalom Series

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the 2016 autocross season! Throughout western Canada, your WCMA clubs have a full season of events planned. There are autoslalom events within the region scheduled for every single weekend from now until October! A big thank you to all of the club officials, organizers and volunteers that make this possible. Their efforts are critical to keeping grassroots motorsport alive and thriving in western Canada.

I’m very pleased to be able to announce that we have a seven-event regional autoslalom championship series scheduled for 2016 and that we have some improvements to the sponsorship and cash prize pool for this year.

SCHEDULE

Here is our 2016 WCMA Regional Autoslalom Championship schedule:

26 Jun - RDSCC - Red Deer Westerner
03 Jul - CSCC  - Red Deer Westerner
31 Jul - QCMA - Regina
27/28 Aug - SASC - Ft. Macleod (2 days scored)
17/18 Sep - WSCC Winnipeg (2 days scored)

This gives us a total of 7 scored days for the 2016 championship. Competitors will need a minimum of 3 events and will be scored on their best 3 events.

I have created and will endeavor to maintain two Google Calendars for this season. The first contains all events from all WCMA clubs and the other has just the Regional championship dates. Event organizers, please feel free to let me know (solosportdirector@wcma) of any changes to your schedules and I will update these calendars. Competitors, please confirm all dates with the hosting clubs just in case I've missed a change.

SPONSORSHIP

The sponsorship program from Talon Tire continues unchanged for this year. This program has 3 parts:

1. Gift coupons for top finishers at Regional events

For each scored event, we will have 2 Talon Tire coupons available for the top 2 finishers (FTD raw and FTD PAX). I will send the coupons out to each club to give away at the end of the competition day.

2. Rebate coupons

All members of WCMA affiliated clubs are eligible to claim a rebate coupon from Talon Tire. The value of the rebate varies from $50 - $100 depending on the purchase. The coupon is downloadable here:

3. Contingency program

The Talon Tire contingency program is available to members of all WCMA club. Rules on the contingency program are in the document below. Simplified, the program is: Run Talon Tire stickers on your car and claim $6 - $22 per podium win in your class during the season.

Club members can combine one Talon Tire Gift Certificate with a Talon Contingency claim and a tire manufacturer’s Rebate coupon.

Complete rules for the redemption of the Talon Tire Coupons are here:

CASH PRIZES & TROPHIES

For 2016, we will again feature cash prizes for the Championship class winners. The trophies will be awarded on the same basis as in previous years based on the number of competitors in each superclass and the trophy cost will be paid by WCMA. The cash prizes for the class (superclass) winners will come from the $5/entry levies from the events. That is, ALL of the levies paid by competitors will go into the cash prize pool and be awarded back to the winners. The more entrants in regional championship events we have, the larger the cash pool will be.

I’m committed to helping all of the clubs and competitors in the region to get the most out of this autoslalom season, so if there is anything that I can do or WCMA can help you with, please contact me at solosportdirector@wcma.ca

I'm pleased to announce that we've added another event to this series. SASC will be hosting events on Aug 27 & 28 and both will be scored in the series. So that's one more opportunity for you to participate in this series and build up your points total. At this time, I don't anticipate changing the scoring from the "best 3 events" format announced earlier.

A reminder for everyone that the first event in the 2016 series is coming up this weekend as RDSCC hosts the opening event at the Westerner venue in Red Deer on Sunday, June 26. RDSCC uses onsite registration (no online registration) so bring your completed registration and tech forms to the event between 8.00AM and 9.00AM.

Registration form: http://rdscc.ca/Portals/0/Documents/05-04-14%2C%20RDSCC%20Driver%20Registration%20and%20Release.pdf
Self-tech form: http://rdscc.ca/Portals/0/Documents/05-03-14%20SoloSport%20Vehicle%20Technical%20Self-Declaration.pdf

In addition to the invaluable WCMA series points you'll gain from the event, Talon Tire will be providing cash coupons for the top RAW and PAX finishers for the day (value varies from $70-$120 depending on tires purchased).

p.s. If you'd like some extra autox seat time, CSCC is also holding a practice event at the Westerner on Saturday, 25June. Register here:

A big thumbs up to the RDSCC for hosting the first regional series event last weekend and for arranging terrific weather as well. I will have regional scores prepared as soon as possible, but in the mean time, please congratulate our top finishers for the day and winners of prize coupons from TalonTire.com:

Results from Event 1 are ready! I had to make a couple corrections for classing, but I think that all is correct. Congratulations to all the class leaders; we had 34 competitors at this first event.

Note: There was some confusion regarding which runs were considered "official" because at the driver's meeting it was announced that only the first 3 runs were counting, but the morning heats had 5 runs per group. I want to clarify that for scoring purposes, only the first three runs were considered official runs for regional series points.

There are two regional series events scheduled for July. The next event is coming up this weekend 03-July, also at the Red Deer Westerner location and hosted by CSCC. Register online via msreg: http://msreg.com/2016CSCCEVENT3

Following that is event #3 hosted by QCMA in Regina on 31-July. Keep an eye on the QCMA facebook page for info on how to register. https://www.facebook.com/QCMA2012

A question was put to me recently about requirements for club membership at autoslalom events and what it means for the regional series. I'm posting my answer here because the topic can be confusing for newbies and even veterans. Hopefully this sheds some light on how WCMA club events are organized.

The big takeaway regarding club memberships is that most events are open to anyone - clubs will generally charge a premium for non-members to participate, but those non-members are welcome. Members-only events are rare, but do occur from time to time. Many people compete for years without ever taking out a club membership.

Think of the regional series as a "layer" of scoring on top of the regular event scoring. Each WCMA club runs a large number of events each season (usually about 10-12), and typically only one or two of them are designated as being in the regional series. So scoring and competition happen at several levels:

1. The individual event itself. There are winners of the various classes on that specific day and all participants regardless of membership affiliation are competing together. For some people, this is the only level of competition they are interested in and that's OK.

2. Club championships - Most clubs run a season-long championship where points are scored for each event and the championship winners are those with the most points in their class at the end. These club championships are generally only open to members of that club - that's who the series is for, their members. The clubs often have year-end dinners and trophies, paid for from the memberships.

3. Regional championship - This is the series that WCMA organizes. This works much the same as a club championship, but with a few more requirements. In addition to being a member of an affiliated club, competitors must compete in at least 3 events in the series to qualify and since each club runs no more than 2 regional events, members need to participate in events hosted by at least one other club besides their "home" club. That's a main reason for the series - to encourage people to visit other locations and meet with autocrossers outside their local club. The WCMA series provides cash prizes and trophies that are presented at the WCMA annual banquet in October of each year.

Competitors in the regional series must be a member of an affiliated club to qualify which means that one must be a member of one of the WCMA-affiliated clubs to receive points in the WCMA championship. Non-member competitors are of course welcome to come to any event and compete but without a club membership, they will be competing for fame and glory on that one day only and will not be included in the scoring for any championship series. Keep in mind that most annual club memberships are around $50 and pay for themselves in just a few events. If you're keen to compete for season championships and trophies, the way to do that is to join a club.

The current list of WCMA affiliated clubs that run autoslalom events is here:

Thank you to the leaders and members of the Calgary Sports Car Club for hosting the second event in the WCMA regional autoslalom series on Sun 03-July at the Westerner in Red Deer. We had competitors from several different clubs present and some good competition. Just a few drops of rain that thankfully had the decency to wait until after the competitive runs were complete. A great day!

Season championship standings are now updated to include the results from event 2:

Congratulations to all competitors and especially to our Talon Tire FTD prize winners for this event:

FTD Pax: Cam W, 2004 Corvette Z06 (AS)

The coupons awarded are good for $80-$120 (depending on tire choice) from TalonTire.com.

For what's it's worth your participation/qualification for minimum number of events would likely improve if you committed to Cash Prize & Trophy figures at the start of the season.

That being said I hope this series continues for 2017, fantastic way to engage competitors outside their local region. Thank you for putting this on!
