  1. @beppca Sorry to disagree with your misguided idea that wider is better. I double-checked Roland's calculations and he is 100% correct in his assessment of which tire width/wheel width combination works the best. In fact, my calculations actually showed that a 185/75 R14 on a 5.0 inch wheel would work best on your car. And as you can clearly see from the graph, skinnier is better! Looking forward to seeing you at the track on the 185's.
  2. Brian Wiebe, Member #6723 renewing #65 please. Please ensure that this number will go 2 seconds faster this year - ha-ha!
  3. Here's another one that's pretty cool - from a drone's perspective, on the track. My apologies on a previous post, thinking that @Dnfwm was piloting this drone. Anyone know who Zwei0080 is? The videos are incredible!
  4. Well, from one Luddite to another, let me fumble my way through the process: 1. Go to MSR and select 2023 WSCC Ice Race Event #5 - Gimli at wscc.motorsportreg.com. 2. When the information page opens, go to the upper right (just below Mikes' picture, and click on "Watch a video (YouTube)". I'm not sure how these videos get loaded/linked onto the MSR page, but it seems like if functions the same as if you went directly to YouTube and searched on "Gimli Ice Racing". I'm sure someone on the Forum can explain how this works. Anyways, yesterday there were about six videos and this morning there were a lot more. Not sure how that works. I tried accessing the videos on both my desktop and cellphone and both work the same. But I must warn you, don't get distracted by the video of the pretty girl ice fishing. I think the video with the drone following the course at Winnipeg Beach is the 3rd video in the list here: Weebly
  5. Check out these videos on the MSR site for the Gimli #5 Event. There's a good selection of YouTube clips to select from past to present. @Dnfwm Great job with the recent Winnipeg Beach events! I love the one with the drone navigating the cone slalom on the banks of the course. I know it wasn't you piloting the drone, because I've seen you at AutoSlalom -ha-ha! Looking forward to seeing everyone out for our last Ice Race extravaganza event of the year!
  6. Nice to see our Club getting visibility in the weekend schedule. Might hang around for the bonfire, marshmallow roast and fireworks. Just hoping they don't get the marshmallows and fireworks packages mixed up.
  7. @conebasher Finally finished viewing all 27 episodes and I'm completely exhausted just from watching all the effort you've put into this project. Don't know how anyone can have that much energy, determination and perseverance to see this project through. Totally insane. Can’t wait to see the finished product on the street and at the track.
  8. If you are interested in our Club activities but are unable to attend our Regular Club meetings, you can still be kept informed by reading the minutes of the meetings posted here on the Forum under the heading "Regular Club Meeting & AGM Minutes". If you were a 2022 WSCC member or are a current 2023 WSCC member, you have viewing permissions for this heading and should be able to access the meeting minutes. If not, please contact me at "secretary@wscc.mb.ca" and I will update your permissions. Thanks, Brian
  9. Ever wonder how the rules and classing system work for someone in the MOD class? Over the last four years we've been averaging at least three MOD cars per event. Greatest number of MOD entries at a single event was six. It would be awesome to have that many at every event. Here’s what OTA rules and car classing database say about the MOD class: Open MOD – this class is for non-production vehicles including formula, open-wheel, sports racing, tube frame, non-production drive configuration, or more than one engine. There are no cars in the database because this is for non-production cars. Our supplementary regulations do not allow open wheel cars at this time. Otherwise, I’m not sure if any Club member has a closed wheel car that would fit into this class. MOD 1 & 2 – no production cars listed in database at this time. The Lotus 7 is described as a “kit car” and must be registered, have a roll bar, and DOT tires and shall be classified as “MOD”. However, OTA doesn’t say what category of MOD. Otherwise, the car can be put on a dyno and weighed to establish a proper class. Maybe someone out there (Chris?) knows why the Lotus 7 is entered as MOD 1. You would need 110 or greater PIP's to get into MOD 1. MOD3 – Only 3 cars listed in the database. (Russ with his Viper ACR is in rarefied company with the Ariel Atom and McLaren MP4) SGT1 to MOD3 – we have a few SGT1 cars where the base model is less than 95 points, but tires or other mods can easily bump them into MOD 3. Examples are Corvette Z06, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Viper GTS, Camaro ZL1 1LE etc. As an aside, if you’re ever thinking of buying another car and want to get the most bang for your buck, you can sort the database by class and/or PIP’s and then cherry-pick the one with the most performance points. Or, conversely, pick one at the bottom of the points range that will allow you to do a lot of mods, while still remaining in the class. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out with our new classing system for 2023. Looking forward to it. By the way, I’ve attached an Excel version of the OTA database (current as of 2022_12_22) in case you’re more comfortable using Excel to filter & sort. Merry Christmas! Brian OTA Database.xlsx
  10. Yikes - the pressure is on! I better find a pen and paper. Seriously folks, I cannot thank Mat enough for encouraging discussion and getting Time Attackers engaged in finding a classing system that will achieve our goal of increasing participation, minimizing costs, and just plain having fun.
  11. Wouldn't you know it - no sooner do I read through every page of the 2022 rules, they release the 2023 rules. Oh well, at least the changes are shown in red text, so that makes it easy. GRIDLIFE 2023 TRACKBATTLE RULES (squarespace.com)
  12. For those not familiar with the “old” PAX system, this is what it would’ve looked like for Event #4 last year 2021 (as compared to what Tyler posted above). This particular example had only 8 classes represented. I’ll dig around and see if I can find recent events with representation from more classes. You will notice that the T3 & T2 guys got pushed down the standings noticeably, while SGT guys moved up. Biggest change, I think, was Darin going from 4th to 10th. Too bad, so sad Mr. No Pistons. 13. Thanks @Shawn Wolkfor all the hard work you put into organizing the banquet. We may have twisted a few arms to get people to register early but the effort was worth it. I'm looking forward to the banquet and if anyone can show me their twisted arm, I'll buy them a drink!
  14. There sure is a lot to digest here. Nice to read some great comments/opinions and insight. We’ve lucky to have so many knowledgeable members in our Club. I’ve had quite the education following up on all the links to the various organizations that were quoted. Speed Freaks? Track Junkies? Track Rats? Who knew? I’ll try and assess this from the perspective of the average Time Attacker and not weigh in too heavily with my personal preferences on which system we run. That’s because I’m 2 seconds off being competitive in my class and have to settle for having fun and just trying to improve. Therefore, any ruleset and classing system works just fine for me. My understanding is that we are sanctioned by the WCMA and are therefore bound by their regulations and classing system contained in “2022 ASN Canada FIA Time Attack Regulations” published by GDS – ASN Canada. The WCMA regulations and classing system are very similar to CASC/OTA regulations and classing system and, in fact, provides a link to the OTA car classification database. A previous version of the WCMA regulations also included the PAX index but is no longer included in the current edition. Not sure if this was intended to give the regional Clubs some freedom in setting their own PAX index, or whether the omission was an oversight. Are we able to develop Supplementary Regulations that establishes a new classing system, and yet still remain in compliance with the WCMA regulations? I certainly hope so. The classing system in the WCMA regulations is cumbersome and requires a lot of calculations just to arrive at your starting class, let alone your PIP schedule, but it can be done. I’m led to believe that we use the OTA classing system because it does the calculations automatically once you select your specific car from their database. Simply a matter of convenience, especially when calculating your PIP schedule. There are a total of 14 classes in the WCMA regulations ranging from Open MOD to T3 (same class structure as the OTA database). I reviewed the classes in SCCA Time Trials and there are 18 classes in total. The six (6) sport classes and five (5) tuner classes pretty much equate to our existing SGT1 thru T3 classes (10 in total) and would cover most of our participants. I suppose you could also equate our MOD classes (4) to their MAX (5) and Unlimited (2) classes. If I understand it correctly, there are seven (7) GridLife classes that Ian whittled down to Enthusiast, Limited, and Unlimited in his ill-fated 2019 proposal. I have a sneaking suspicion that most Time Attackers that were polled didn’t take the time to fully understand the rules or the proposed classing structure. I know that I didn’t have a full appreciation of what Ian offered and voted against it – mostly because I didn’t understand it. To sum it up, I think most Time Attackers want a system that is fair and encourages competition with others. If we could somehow balance the number of classes with our typical number of entries that would equate to at least 3 entries per class, then that would add competitiveness to each class without the need for a PAX system. Only trouble, it is difficult to get 30 entries or more for each race day. Even with 30 entries, you’re still going to end up with some classes with one or less entry. Just like the current system. And I think that’s the advantage of a PAX system, where your competition is the entire field and not just people in your class. It’s unfortunate, however, that a PAX system, no matter how much it’s tweaked, will never please everyone. Brian
  15. Yeah, I think the previous post you're referring to was dated Nov 04, 2021
  16. A great job as always with the timing results, David. And it was nice to have the live commentary on the radio, letting us know the lap times. Did you notice how almost everyone improved their times at this event? And if that wasn't enough, Austin had to go and smash the lap record. I can't say enough about the time and effort put forward in organizing these events. Thank-you very much, whoever you are. And let's not forget our gracious hosts for providing us the track along with awesome homemade muffins and a hot lunch. Wonder if they would consider adopting me?
  17. Another great DirtX event! It was good turnout and nice to see some new faces. GALS RULE! I can't say enough about our super-hosts, Randy and his wife Chris, who not only allow us to race on their property, but go out of their way to make sure we have a good time. Providing us with homemade Chili for lunch made the day. And as far as the fun runs at the end of the day, what can I say - they're FUN! Check it out:
  18. Yeah, I know this thread is supposed to be about Event #3 from two weeks ago but I got thinking about how much fun I've had at DirtX in the last two years. I've attached a link from two years ago that shows some of antics you can expect at DirtX. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well cars that are daily-drivers handled the course. Not only did they post respectable times, but they escaped unscathed. As a matter of fact I was thinking of entering the RS with its minimal ground clearance. It would be like handing a kid a blank cheque and putting him in a candy store. Which reminds me to thank Mat for allowing me to take a few courtesy laps in his Subie. I know there are a lot of my IceX, AutoSlalom, and Time Attack buddies who already have the perfect car for DirtX. And what about those Ice Racers that need a shakedown run before the season begins? Hoping to see a full grid on Saturday!
  19. Don't know how you manage to single-handedly run timing and calculate scoring, while at the same time ensuring no cows enter the track. Well, not unless they've registered and have a number. Great job as always David!
  20. I was told that the 1/2 +1 rule was so that a person could only win one class and it's been in place since I joined the club. Just a note about the leaderboard - Event #9 is incorrect. The results of the School on Aug 20th were inadvertently posted as event #9. That explains why I received 10 points for "Event #9". Anyone that's seen me drive knows it would be impossible for me to get 10 points in Mixed Class. Helix is aware and is in the process of making corrections and will confirm exactly how many events we've had this year. Thanks again Helix, for all your hard work!
  21. Hoping to see another great turn out for our last track day event #8 on September 23rd. I've just updated the reserved numbers list - so please check before you register to ensure we don't have duplication of car numbers. Thanks!
  22. Upon further review by the Command Center, the ruling on the field stands. Believe it or not, I did get 10 points that day but there was only one other entry and it was their first time doing an AutoSlalom event and they should've been in Novice class. So, I did manage (just barely) to squeak out a win. Sorry for causing you any extra work Helix.
  23. Nice to see a close battle in the Novice division. Also, goes to show the importance of attending as many events as possible with the 1/2 + 1 rule for drops. Not that it matters, but there is no way in heck that I could've received 10 points for event #9. Well, not in less I was the only entry in the mixed class - ha-ha! Thanks @helix for your efforts in putting together the leaderboard - no easy task.
  24. You summed it up perfectly - that's exactly why we keep coming out to St. Andrew's - it's not about the venue, it's about the people. Thank-you @egorlike
