^^ @kmiller is correct. In addition, I can add from my own research that adding minimum 20% straight toluene will allow 20 Lbs boost or 12:1 static comp is ok. I have added up to 40 % toluene with 13:1 static comp and 25lbs boost, but anything over 30% was negligible. note that I started with regular gas, 87 octane. Toluene is available over the counter from any paint supply shop in 5 gal containers. every octane “booster” has a high percentage of toluene and/or benzene, then Alky and other fillers. But toluene is the aromatic hydrocarbon that makes it happen, benzene had been blacklisted as a carcinogen in specific quantities a few years ago. Note that in the 80’s during the “turbo era” in F1, the fuel of choice was 97-98% toluene and 2-3% methanol to stabilize. also note that bore size has a direct effect on octane requirement, much like normally aspirated vs forced induction. With a larger bore, the flame front must travel further, therefore selecting fuel based on burn rate or flame speed becomes a consideration. Using pure Toluene has been a simple compromise with regards to octane requirements and induction style; high boost (requires slower burn rate) and high comp, natural aspiration (requires faster burn rate).

Youtube Reference lap

Here is my lap in a stock RS Focus last august. No commentary, maybe it will help. NoPistons will share informative content. Hope to see you at the track. -
Right on Mat. I have been coming up to this track since 1976. Ive watched my Dad (and my mom!) race here and watched his return, the first time back in over 20 years. My cousin (also raced karts here early 80’s!) came up and was energized to the point he bought a race car and will be joining us next year (Dason will be happy lol). I have raced myself at all ends of this wonderful place, drag raced, kart raced (when the kart track was was at the north end and it’s current south locale) and road raced, and even made some laps on the MX track. I’ve got vivid memories from the early days of the Atlantic races, Players 100 and IKF championships ...and even a couple pit-passes and a T-shirt. like others here, I can say your words echo our thoughts. It’s a super weird year, but the People made it great. This facility is the only one in Canada like it - and it’s because of the people - so thank you!

Many moons ago I AX’d at a couple venues in town (used to be MAXA before AX was under the WSCC banner, but I digress...) I went to the Downs event because a very good driver I raced with in Karts was trying it for the first time and I was quite interested to see what he did. His results were rather anti-climactic; very similar to @Dnfwm - if he wasn’t dead-last, he was next to dead last. 3 weeks later he had another first, actually 3: his first ever Formula Ford race, his first time racing on Isle Notre Dame, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. His first FF1600 Pole position and his first FF1600 race win....ok, thats 4, but who’s counting...He went on to win the Skip Barber FF2000 Scholarship and more AX, as Corey mentioned, is a special skill set. It really is. I gave up because I just couldn’t do it, it takes time and a level of dedication I just couldn’t connect with. It’s going to take a different approach to succeed in AX. What I’m saying is the point system has zero influence on your ability to drive, failing to win at your first attempt at AX has zero to do with your ability to drive OR your cars competitiveness, and re-classing your car is not going to change your raw lap times. Let the rule makers make the rules and let the drivers drive the cars.

Unreal. I hope this gets resolved. Sorry Roland.

The points have been address well and I won’t beat a dead horse, but I will say that when I go to work every single day, first thing I do is put on a face mask, sanitize my work area and fill out a 5 question Covid-19 Status Reporting form, question #1 asks “if I or someone in my household in the last 14 days has been in contact with someone who has travelled outside Manitoba”. its just how it is right now - nothing more, nothing less. Keith - you’re always welcome here, you always have been.

Great job guys

@Dnfwm for a real world explanation gimme a call (dm) and i’ll be glad to let you know what I know. The short version is that nothing is perfect and they know it. Not long ago I was in YYZ and had lunch with one of the OTA directors. They’re good guys and know it’s not perfect and they try to make the corrections to keep it close as possible and fair. In fact I had to laugh as they made the Vette and Camaro “less dominant” with HI changes, this is the opposite to the Nissan GTR, they had to make the GTR more competitive because the Vette was kicking it’s ass - Detroit is doing it right! matt

Yes - as @donrolandofurioso mentioned, brakes are a safety item and are a free mod, so go ahead and put the big brakes on. I did the same.

@Jim Eh. That’s actually ludicrous. Autopac told me to wait a month and if nothing, then they will cover the loss...less my deductible of course, because it’s my fault some morally bankrupt sub-human multi-celled organism stole my new, never used trailer that was Locked up and insured on private property. don’t get me started on autopac. I love Manitoba, in fact I am a 5th generation Manitoban, with my great grandparents coming here in the 1880’s, but if there was 1 reason to leave it, MPIC would be that reason...unfortunately every other province has a similar deficiency. So I will stay...plus I can’t race for cheaper anywhere else in Canada -
New Trailer Stolen - any info appreciated
mcorrie replied to mcorrie's topic in General Motorsports Talk
@MRS Joe That’s more than Likely what’s happening - we went through the area over the weekend and looked at the areas that would make sense. The hitch/ball lock wasn’t anywhere around, so I assume they pushed it out by hand, rested the locked tongue on the towing vehicle and pulled it with the chains until they got clear and then cut the lock off. it’s probably already a cheap coat of black and long gone. What goes around, comes around. -
Hey - my new trailer’s been stolen. So after literally years of deliberation and even some procrastination, I bought a new trailer for the race car in early April. It’s an all Aluminum BW Trail 18ft open flat deck. Bought it new, towed it to my Dads place in Hillside Beach, and there it sat locked up, anxiously awaiting the green light to the 2020 season. Apparently, during the night of Friday 15 May, some dirtbag asspipe with no soul decided they would take it. The RCMP have been notified, MPI is sending letters to tow truck operators and garages in the area but they hold little hope of recovery. It was insured but it’s not a matter of insurance more than the moral vacancy prevalent in society in this time of national crisis. if anyone reading this can keep an eye open for my trailer, please notify me here or the RCMP directly. The only good thing is that the season will have a delayed start and I hope to have my new trailer for the first event, whenever that may be. matt

Excellent Brian! And I might add that I think it’s once again Cool to ride a Honda 90 ...I’m sure there’s more, but this was great. thanks! -
Yes he was. Johnny Restored and currently races one of his cars, the #3 Datsun 710. Jim was an accomplished racer. He was a co-owner of a race prep shop here in Winnipeg and raced throughout the US and Canada, Datsuns, Formula Ford and Formula Super Vee with a Ralt RT4 before he retired. Look for a memorial decal on his old car this summer. matt

JAMES (JIM) COLIN KING BORN: FEB 07, 1938 DATE OF PASSING: MAY 05, 2020 OFFER CONDOLENCES OR MEMORY JAMES (JIM) COLIN KING 1938 – 2020 It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts, that our family announces the passing of Jim, with his wife by his side, on Tuesday May 5, after a hard fought battle with Alzheimer's at the age of 82 years at Riverview Health Centre. Jim was predeceased by his parents, James Colin and Jennie May of New Brunswick, brother Bill of British Columbia, sisters, Marion and Evelyn of New Brunswick. He leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Joanne, his sisters, Helen of New Brunswick and Edna of Ontario, his children, Gloria Larocque (Reg), Gail Masson (Myron), Jim King (Gail), Kevin King (Rachel), seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Jim was born in Apohaqui, New Brunswick on February 7, 1938. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1955, and a few years later he was transferred to Winnipeg, where he settled. Jim left the Air Force in 1963, and became involved in sales working for various auto dealers and construction companies. He enjoyed the company of people and had the "gift of the gab" as they say. His outgoing personality suited his chosen occupation. He had a great sense of humour and could carry on a conversation with a total stranger and make them feel at ease. Jim was very athletic and enjoyed numerous sports. His first passion was auto racing, which he found very exciting and also awarded him with numerous wins. He retired from auto racing and found a new passion in golf, curling, senior men's hockey and lastly in his mid to late 60s, took to the sport of running in a competitive manner and winning several competitions in his age group. His favourite run took place in Banff Alberta, which he attended three consecutive years. Jim lived a full and eventful life until Alzheimer's took a hold on him and ceased all his activities. We extend our appreciation to all the staff at Riverview Health Centre who cared for Jim over the past several years. As per Jim's wishes, cremation has taken place and interment will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date due to Covid-19. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. "Death leaves a heartache No one can heal Love leaves a memory No one can steal" GREEN ACRES

FYI http://speed.academy/100-tread-wear-track-tire-review-nankang-ar1-maxxis-rc1-toyo-r888r/ “In the end, the Nankang AR-1 came out on top in terms of lap times and its advantage over the Maxxis RC-1 and Toyo R888R was clearly in the braking zones and into the first half of the corners. The Nankang AR-1 also had the most neutral handling balance from turn-in to the apex followed by gradual and predictable breakaway characteristics as it transitioned towards oversteer balance on corner exit.”

Also interesting is the Corvette, Camaro’s and Mustang Handling Index increased not my Camaro - just the fast ones From OTA forum: ”The biggest change is in our tire rules. The definition of a "street" tire rated at zero PIPs is now for a treadwear UTQG rating of 180 to 249 up from 140 and over last year. Again the Toyo R888, R888R and Nitto NT01 tires classify as "street" tires despite their UTQG rating of 100. We are also introducing a new class of tires (as yet unnamed) with UTQG ratings of 250 and up which will actually classify as negative 5 PIPs or 1 class. Next year will be a 6 competition event season with the best 5 out of 6 events scored. There will be no double points event. The schedule will follow shortly. A few cars will have their classification adjusted as follow. The handling index for the 2015 and newer Mustang GTs will increase by 5 HI The handling index for the 2010-2013 Grand Sport Corvette will increase by 5 HI The handling index for the 2017 and newer Camaro SS 1IE and Camaro ZL1 will increase by 10 HI

Super glad you were able to get that all written down!! Good reading! -
Awesome! Love it!

@beppcaGoing Faster is the best book on Driving I’ve read. I bought that when it was first released many moons ago. The Skip Barber guys have been at it for a long time and rest assured that what you read there is quite practical and applicable. Specifically on how they explain the types of corners and how to approach them. @Rare Snake pics of the toyotahome!! Those things are great! And for the most part, it doesn’t matter what you drive, as long as your get out there a drive - but rest assured we are all SUPER grateful for the volunteer work you do!!

My back hurts watching that

Same as me David - I have a garage but it’s skinny, can’t work on suspension or brakes in there. But that’s cool. With the nice weather it’s good to be outside! Scott - I have been contemplating a gearing change for that same reason.... I have 3.42 right now. So 3.73 is logical. With the double-overdriven T56 i could run 4.11 with no problems. But changing the headers to alter the power band Is a new challenge for me, I have no experience with this and am looking forward to the results. As it sits, I’m in 3rd gear from turn 3 until the start-finish line where I pull 4th and keep it there til T3 again...kinda boring, but as a rule I don’t take the motor past 5800 and learning to carry momentum through the corners is a great exercise in physics, specifically Newton’s 1st law of motion. I dunno, maybe I should re-visit the gearing... that being said, the rear of my car was exhibiting an uncomfortable lack of control despite my best efforts to put it where I’d like it to be. in preparation for the season finale in sept 2019, I got a new sway bar for the rear (never had one before) and also clamped a coil down in an effort to follow the manufacturers recommended settings when using Hoosier tires - they said minimum is to run 10% more spring with their tires. well, due to weather I didn’t get to the track in September, so it’s going to be a new deal for the first track day of 2020 - whenever that will be. Either way, I’ll be ready!

Dason - good on you. You’re right, this is a great opportunity to keep up with our automotive connections the only way we really can in these highly unusual times. ...and I’m not on any social media either - just not my bag. But I’d like to know what everyone is working on. I kept blowing the tires off in turns 3-4-5 so I’m putting a different set of headers on my car in an effort to move the torque peak up a bit and free up a bit more hp. I went from 1 5/8” shorty’s to 1 3/4” full length headers. As soon as the weather is good enough I will bolt them on. If the dollar gets better I might get stiffer springs but exchange is just too high right now. Dason - any plans for your car?? anybody else trying something new??
