Hey everyone,

I didn't have a chance to put a rally report together, but, we're off to the 100-Acre Wood rally in Missouri as we speak, along with Daryn Chernick/Joe Czubaty and their crew, which will be their inaugural event. The entry list and liveupdates are available at:

Jan and Jody are doing well, but Daryn and Joe started last and are not mentioned yet as finishers.... maybe they are just a bit late :(

If you go thru the results stage by stage they have a 2 and 50 second penlty on stage 4 but are still in the rally....second last, but still in it it seems.

Looks like something bad happened during the Hazel creek South stage, they were 11 minutes behind the next car and don't make another appearance in later stages. Still, it's their first rally and they haven't had a lot (if any) real practice.

They're in the results for SS12 now. They weren't awhile ago though.

What a rush!

It didn't go as planned, and we learned a hell of a lot doing this rally!

Unfortunately we had no Rally computer that worked for stages 1-4, and after doing an AMAZING job with no help, Joe sent us on a wrong turn, and we ended up coming in 15 mins late... It's really hard to see some turnoffs at night without an odomoter or speedometer of any kind.....

Unfortunately on Stage 7, I was just starting to really hit my groove, and as we went left around a medium turn in full drift mode, the VERY minimal notes didn't show that we had a ditch on the inside covered with leaves, so the front tire dug in, and we went for a little roll.... ok it was more of a twist, but after shaking it off, we actually drove the car out and kept on going! That little VW is tough!

We got through the next 4 stages with some speed, but after going into service, found that our snow tire was finished from the roll, so we had to finish the race with one gravel tire on the back..... NOT GOOD! To make things a bit more interesting, headlights started to leak, so there were no headlights on the car (we found this out in the middle of nowhere when it was too late to go back and fix it...)

BUT after getting through the last 3 stages quite slowly, and doing the transits with the help of an evo (at this point we had no headlights AND no wiper blades in the rain) we managed a late arrival at the finish line...

This sport is amazing, and I have never been pushed to drive at levels like this before (and I'm really slow as it is), but I'm going to be back out for Mahnoman and Ojibwe to do the gravel rally I wanted at this event.

Thanks to everyone for their support,

Daryn Chernick / Joe Czubaty

What a blast!

We did GREAT under less than ideal conditions.

Considering how we rushed to get there and showed up with an under prepared car, we did really well and I’ actually proud of our results.

The first day – stages 1,2,3,4, the Rally computer was at least 50% out, and we missed one turn that put us way off. Stage one was the first time we tried to get it set up and calibrated.

During stages one and two Daryn was still feeling the car out having only driven it at the ice track.

If you remove the nearly 3 minute penalties from stage 4, consider the standings.

In day two Daryn was hooking up with the car nicely. Stage five and six are pretty indicative of our capabilities as rookies.

Stage seven was going VERY well and we were making great time until.... well I’ll find a pic to post.

We lost a snow tire (flat) on seven and had to finish the rest of the race with one mud tire causing us to really tame things down.

Navigating out way thought the last two stages yielded an abundance of auto parts – bits of rear bumpers, front wheel tubs and I even saw a light pod 15 ft in to the bush. Cars sitting is washouts with the rear axles resting on the ground.

Between racing and wrenching, there weren’t many days with more than 4 hours sleep.

Since we haven’t built up enough coefficients yet, the stage notes were not very elaborate. This left Daryn driving for up to two miles on sight.

More elaborate stage notes will come later.

Over all if we had more prep time, and better tires, we would have done much better.

Huge thanks to our sponsors

Thanks to Mark and Speed World for the trailer to get there and back (we’ll talk Type I’s later)

Thanks to Jan and Jodi Zedril for the advice, insight and wisdom they have shared.

So how does the stage notes stuff work? The better you do the better the notes are?

Good to hear you guys had fun on your first event and you made it home in one piece :D

The stage notes is tricky, there's three kinds. For novices (us) you basically get one note every mile or so that indicates a potentially hazardous or fatal turn or situation... The rest is up to the driver to figure out! Now also keep in mind that we are talking huge elevation changes, and in MANY cases you have NO IDEA what is ahead, so charging into a corner full blast without knowing if it tightens will get you sitting in a tree lol.

The second level is a booklet you purchase (but you have to have completed the equivalent of 3 races to get them) and it has EVERY turn and hazard marked in it. This is more like what you'd get on a video game. There is distances to every turn, and it is quite detailed. The only drawback is that you do not get to customize them.

The last kind is recce notes. On some rallies (such as this one) you are allowed to go drive the stages slowly in a civilian car and see what they are like, and write your own notes on the conditions as you go. For experienced teams, this yields the best possible notation, and you can customize your information to give the driver what he needs to do his best.

As far as I know, we were the ONLY novice team at the event, and it is likely that we were also the ONLY team running stage notes. To place any stage above last means you did pretty frickin good considering I had to brake at just about every turn to keep the front tires gripping...

I'm still in shock regarding the weekend, but I can't wait to go back!

HUGE thanks to all of our sponsors! Mark, the trailer was awesome, and Nik, the oil kept the car running like a tank!

Jan and I would like to congratulate you guys as well. You both did an amazing job in handling all of the stress associated in running a first event, let alone an event with the conditions that were at hand and everything else you had to deal with. It was one tough rally, no matter which way you cut it, but, when it gets down to it, as you can attest...there is simply no other experience like a stage rally.

By the way, I found the exact location on stage that you rolled...3.84 miles into the stage on a Left 6 tightens!!! Ballsy man...that's insane! We had no idea you guys were that close to becoming tree ornaments. We were listening to the ham radio during each and every transit and were extremely happy to hear you guys were still in the game despite the roll, getting stuck and making a wrong turn on the transit, which is an extremely easy thing to do...even with headlights and a working tripmeter. (most of the roads are unmarked)

:bigeek:

Glad you kept it outta the trees, you kept saying it was close... but damn thats close!

Also anyone got a translation for the notes Jody posted? I can guess most of it small crest large crest road righ+left but what does LG stand for?

3.78 Long 6 tightens large crest followed by small crest road on right?

Long? i would guess...

so a long corner as it you'll be in it for a bit, we'll see what they say

Yup that's a long...

jody-z
02-27-2008, 11:47 AM
Yup, you pretty much got it...to be more precise, the L6>/lgsmCr (rd R) 50 = left six tightens over long small crest, past road on right, with 50 meters to the next instruction (dip, bridge, creek, jump, turn, etc)

Joe is right...it is relatively straight forward...the hard part is keeping-up in the notes while you're flying through the stage, delivering the information to the driver at the correct time so things click along (not too early or late), and trying you're best not to miss anything important or loose your place in the notes altogether. The last thing you want to do is to miss calling-out a L1, L2 or L3, or calling out a L6 when you should be calling out a L1 hairpin :)

Wow! Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. Based on my xbox rally experience I concur with jody-z. Rolling off a tightening L6 is ballsy, could have been much much worse. Glad to hear you are both ok and were able to take pictures of it (I don't think I would have been relaxed enough to think of pics). Gonna be a helluva story for the kids and grandkids.

Congrats on making it through your first rally!
