In the interests of keeping malware at bay and of protecting us from (inadvertant?) copyright oopses, life gets worse it seems.

just curious - What defines this "premium content" the article talks about?

I presume that if you are playing a commercial dvd or cd, Vista crappifies the info if and only if you have certain other kinds of software available, like if you could copy the info...I think it sounds like a copyright thing.
